Message from our vicar
Dearly beloved in Christ,

The young man said to him, “All these things I have kept. What do I still lack?”(Mathew 19:20).

We have to make many choices and decisions in our life every day. “The destiny of your soul is in your own hands by the choice you make” (Billy Graham). Jesus’ encounter with the rich young man is found in the three synoptic gospels. The passages stres the fact that the life of committed faith in Jesus involves painful choices. He approached Jesus with a desire to follow him. He was a young man with great potential. In spite of his position in society, his religion and wealth, he felt something lacking in his life. He was willing to listen and learn. But he made the wrong decision. Of
all the people who ever came to Jesus, this man is the only one who went away grieving. He thought he could do something to earn eternal life. Jesus pointed him to the law of Moses to make him understand that the law is only a mirror to see himself, but it can’t save him. “A person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ” (Galatians 2;16). Jesus teaches that the attitudes of the heart matter more than the external obedience
of the law. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught hatred is the moral equivalent to murder. The young man was looking for easy discipleship. He didn’t love God with all his heart. Possessions were his priority. His wealth robbed him of God’s greatest blessing -the eternal life. Money is a marvelous servant but a terrible master. If you possess money, be grateful for it and use it for God’s glory. If money possesses you then it is a great danger. There are many things in life that money can’t buy. The deceitfulness of riches had so choked the soil of this young man’s heart. So he was unable to receive the good seed of the word.

Peter’s response to this incident is interesting “See we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” Later in Acts 3; 6 we read his testimony “I have no silver and gold but what I do have I give it to you.” His attitude has changed from, what will I get to what I will give. The story of Zacchaeus tells us the great change in attitude occurred in him through faith in Christ. He realized that his greed is sin and coming to faith gave him the vision to be a blessing for others. He made the right choice and entered into a new life with Jesus. He entered into the joy of new friendship whereas the rich young man was possessed by the love of money. He went away in great sorrow.

Let us look into ourselves. Do we truly follow Jesus?

May the Holy Spirit help us to follow Him more closely.

May God bless us all,

With love and prayers,

Rev. Sajit Thomas John
Vicar.
